Live Review: Overlaps (Rock City Beta, May 9th 2019)

A modest crowd ventured out to see Italy’s Overlaps return to Nottingham on Thursday following their fantastic support slot with The Rasmus in the venue’s main hall a few months earlier. The size of the audience was vastly smaller but the band performed with just as much, if not more, passion and energy as last time around as they made their way through the ten tracks from their debut self-titled record.

It can’t be denied that this band know how to write a hook, as evidenced right from their opening gambit ‘Right or Wrong’ and only getting more infectious as the set moved to debut single ‘On Monday’, recent slowie ‘Dreams for Sale’ and the memorable ‘Hang on You’. It isn’t just the singles that are worth a shot either as recent set addition ‘Scent of Rain’ proves that their fantastic debut record is well worth a listen.

Highlights from the short-but-sweet gig included a cover of ‘Scratch the Pitch’ by Guano Apes, a ferocious run-through of ‘Countdown’ and the beautiful ‘Vicious Cycle’, the closing track from their record and a song that really stands out from the rest of the set for its vulnerability and pace. ‘Is This Really Love?’ ends proceedings; arguably the bands finest track to date, it is a fitting summary of Overlaps – memorable, infectious and very much worthy of your attention.
